FanFest notes/quotes from the Lincecum-Wilson-Freddy Sanchez Q&A session | Extra Baggs

Dispatches from a record-setting FanFest, which feels like an extension of the World Series victory parade in November:

Here’s the best way to explain it: In previous FanFests, Tim Lincecum got the rock star treatment and needed a police escort everywhere. Now, they’re ALLrock stars.
 
Brian Wilson interrupted a Q&A session with Matt Cain and Bruce Bochy when fans went crazy for him as he walked behind a curtain.

“I think the President just walked by,” Cain said.

“He’s OK,” Bochy said. “It’s the machine you have to worry about.”

Wilson, Lincecum and Freddy Sanchez were up next on the Q&A stage, and it was highly entertaining stuff.

One bit of hard-hitting FanFest news: Lincecum has a second puppy – a half-pug, half-French bulldog named Kayo (after his grandpa, who was into boxing).

Lincecum said the World Series didn’t sink in until he re-watched Game 5 and found himself getting a little emotional. For many other players, the tears are just hitting them now. A few players, including Andres Torres and Pat Burrell, got choked up while speaking at a Town Hall event with season-ticket holders last night at UCSF.

Freddy Sanchez said it still hasn’t really sunk in.

“I don’t think it’s going to until April, when we get our rings,” he said.

The players were officially sized for those rings yesterday, by the way.

Wilson is definitely getting mobbed and cheered louder than anyone else. His teammates loved his “George Lopez Show” appearance last week, when he came out attired as a deranged mix of the Gorton’s Fisherman and the Dos Equis man.

“Personally, it was the funniest show I’ve ever seen,” Lincecum said. “They should rename it the `Brian Wilson Show.’”
Freddy Sanchez was on Lopez’s show in November and is a friend. He texted Lopez after Wilson’s appearance, asking what he thought of the Giants’ bearded closer now.

“I freaking love that guy,” Lopez texted back.

Wilson was asked about the grass-roots movement to host “Saturday Night Live.” He said he’d love to do it, only because he knows Giants fans would want to see it.

“It would be for you guys,” Wilson said. “I try to show we’re not just robots who wake up and perform. We appreciate you so our give-back is to be quirky, show some personality and have some fun.”

The guys were asked a sharp question by a young fan, who wanted to know if they expected to win more or less than 92 games.

“With the pitching staff we have coming back,” said Lincecum, “I don’t see why we can’t win 100 games.”

Said Sanchez: “I’ll take the same amount of wins if it gets us back to the World Series.”

Wilson didn’t need to put a number on it to make a postseason guarantee: “We’re going to win the final game of the season and we’re going to the playoffs. That’s what’s happening.”

Wilson said he kept his workout regimen exactly the same, which meant starting his workouts on November 1, as always.

“Luckily for me, I started just before Game 4 at Texas,” he said.

Wilson said he was told as a Little Leaguer that to be a good pitcher, you have to run. So he logged over 700 miles since the World Series clincher. Several fans gasped, obviously impressed.

“Yeah,” Wilson said, smiling. “I know.”

Wilson provided a pretty entertaining recollection of the final pitch in Texas, when he struck out Nelson Cruz to nail it down. He said he wasn’t nervous because he saw a small section of Giants fans sitting in the upper deck above home plate, all standing and screaming. Then he looked in the dugout and saw everyone calm but clearly ready to unleash fury on him.

“I was thinking, `San Francisco deserves this,’” Wilson said. “My final pitch is for all the legends of the game in San Francisco. I just smiled, threw the pitch, knew what was going to happen, and then I had a bunch of guys aiming for me.”

Wilson isn’t the only Giant who knows how to play to the crowd. Lincecum was asked if there was any lineup or ballpark he disliked more than others.

“I don’t fear any lineup,” he said, to a thunderous ovation.

The microphone was passed to Wilson.

“C’mon,” he said. “Seriously?”

“I’m not afraid to be in a situation that demands the utmost perfection. I’m thinking there’s no shot he wants to face me right now. I don’t take anything for granted, but at the same time, I think, `Let’s do this.’”

Lincecum said he didn’t mind being called “the Freak” and it’s better than some of the other nicknames he’s been called by teammates over the years, and “some of them have been really, really bad.”

Lincecum also was asked to name his new, somewhat scraggly moustache. He took a cue from Wilson.

“Fear the Fu?” he said.

Wilson was asked about his beard, of course. He said he doesn’t have a beard comb and it grows magically. He also was asked if he dyes it.

“I think we’ve gone over this,” he said. “We play a lot of day games. It gets a lot of sun. It’s blond, it’s tan … it’s ready.”

The players shared plenty of fond memories from the victory parade, too.

“We had to start a riot,” joked Wilson, who left his cable car and nearly caused a chain-link barricade to collapse when he tried to climb it. “OK, yeah. I got scared when it started to fall down.

“I was actually kind of mad the parade didn’t go on until … well … right now.”
